Painting Demonstration and presentation about being an Expedition Artist aboard Phoenicia | Verdugo Hills Art Association | |
While giving a painting demonstration, I will share what it is like to be an Expedition Artist with my second expedition, The Phoenician Ship Expedition, conceived and captained by Philip Beale. It was a 600BCE sailboat built in the ancient lands of the Phoenicians, Syria, and circumnavigated Africa as originally reported by Herodotus in 500BCE. I will give a demonstration of my entire process of creating artwork while traveling, from idea, to sketchbook, to drawing, to canvas. I will bring my sketchbooks and some of the tools I use for expeditions, traveling, and plein air painting. While giving the demonstration, I will sketch anecdotes of life aboard including images of some of the 50 paintings I created for the Phoenicia Exhibition, a solo show held in London in 2011. |

phoenicia expedition |
Danielle is an expedition artist for Phoenicia, a re-creation of a 6th century BCE Phoenician sailing vessel. It departed from Arwad, Syria in August 2008, traveled through the Suez Canal, around the Horn of Africa, down the east coast, up the west coast of Africa, through the Straights of Gibraltar and finally sailed across the Mediterranean to return to Syria. In all Phoenicia traveled 20,000 miles and was over 2 years at sea. The circumnavigation of Africa may be followed by another voyage to bring the ship to the United Kingdom in 2013. See Danielle's stories of Life Aboard Phoenicia. | ![]() |

| Expedition to Bali | borobudur ship expedition | ||
| Five patrons sent Danielle to Bali, Indonesia to create a series of over 20 paintings... | In 2004 Danielle was invited to participate in the international Borobudur Ship Expedition. As Expedition Artist, she traveled 10,000 miles with the replica 8th century Indonesian wooden boat from Indonesia to Seychelles, Madagascar, South Africa, and Ghana, painting and drawing. The boat was of a design based on stone relief carvings found on the ancient Buddhist temple at Borobudur on the island of Java. The unique body of work she produced during this epic voyage (over 100 paintings and photographs) was subsequently presented at a solo exhibition held at Thompson’s Gallery in central London. | ||
| Danielle makes every effort to create her artwork in an environmentally responsible manner. She uses the highest quality materials. This includes low VOC or no VOC paints, thinners, and mediums, and FSC certified wood for stretchers. She recycles whenever possible. | |||
