artist's statement

Earthquakes, tsunami, civil unrest in Aceh and East Timor, and terrorist bombings have focused the world's attention on Indonesia--a large, complex and beautiful nation of 17,000 islands and hundreds of languages which enjoys a great diversity of art and culture. Now is a good time to remind the world of these resources and, in a spirit of solidarity with the people of Indonesia, to help make them available to a wider audience.

Supported by patrons in Indonesia, Singapore, and the United Kingdom--led by principal patron Dugal Muller--Danielle Eubank is working to celebrate the people, landscape, elephants, and artistic heritage of the island of Bali. Located in Ubud, a centre of traditional Balinese arts, she has created a series of paintings, while exchanging ideas with local artists with a view to subsequent exhibitions in Singapore and Jakarta.

For those supporting the initiative, this represents an opportunity to do good, to support the exchange of artistic ideas, to promote the local culture and, in short, to patronise an artistic collaboration between cultures. In this way we can help to shift the world's attention to the positive features of the region.

Somewhat in the spirit of Paul Gauguin's Tahiti paintings, Danielle Eubank wishes to contribute a lasting record of Balinese art and culture and, by working with Balinese artists, to share their way of looking at the world through their art.

The Project
Beginning July 2005, Danielle Eubank spent three months immersed in Balinese culture in the artistic centre of Ubud, completing a series of more than 20 oil paintings. These images will later go on display in Singapore, Jakarta and London.

Bali is the only Hindu society in South East Asia, with a thriving rice-growing tradition virtually unchanged for 1200 years. Balinese painting, in the regional styles of Wayang, Ubud, Pengosekan, and Batuan, is highly respected throughout Indonesia, and in recent years a group called Young Artists has been brought to public attention, encouraged by Dutch artist Arie Smit, and others.

The Artist
Danielle Eubank is an established professional artist with a proven record working in Indonesia and with Indonesian officials. She was the Expedition Artist for the international sailing expedition, The Borobudur Ship Expedition, which was conceived and created by Philip Beale and the Indonesian government with help from UNESCO. Experts from the island of Pagarunen hand-built a replica 8th century sailing vessel in the style of the boats found on the stone relief carvings of the Borobudur Temple in central Java. An international crew, including Danielle, sailed the boat across the Indian Ocean from Jakarta to Seychelles, Madagascar, South Africa, and up the Atlantic coast to Ghana. In July 2004, upon completion of the voyage, an exhibition at Thompson's Gallery in central London featured over 100 of her paintings and photographs.
